As its name would suggest, the New York Review of Architecture reviews architecture in New York. But this big, clever, funny magazine does much more too, delivering smart and gloriously overblown criticism on everything from movies, to rubbish collection, to cafes in banks.

In this issue:

  • New York’s timeless obsession with banishing its rat population
  • The politics at play in preserving New York landmarks
  • Sneakers as signifiers of national identity
  • The battles over New York’s congestion pricing
  • And The Brutalist and Megalopolis are considered as a pair of architectural movies

The third edition of our Surprise Pack is the ideal way to get a taste of our monthly magazine club experience, but without subscribing. Buy this Surprise Pack and you’ll get a one-off delivery of five previous subscriber magazines for just £20. But there are only 100 of these Surprise Packs available and we’re not re-stocking, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.

The magazines in this pack are worth a total of £72 and just like with our monthly magazine club, you won’t know exactly what they are until they arrive at your door. (Don’t be fooled by the illustration above – these are not magazines about coffee! Though we thoroughly recommend reading them with a drink by your side.) They cover a range of subjects, from art and design, to literature and the environment, and they have all been enjoyed by our subscribers at some point in the last year.

Numbers will always be strictly limited for these special offers, so grab yours while you can. And at the risk of stating the obvious, please don’t buy this Surprise Pack if you have been a Stack subscriber in the last year, because you will already own these magazines!

Our artwork for this third edition is by Brazilian artist Daniel Batista. We love his bright, wobbly illustrations – to see more of his work, go to instagram.com/freshprincipee.

Backstage Talks is produced in conjunction with By Design Conference, a design and business event held every summer in Bratislava. The conference brings together designers, artists, architects, and other creative people, and the magazine captures a snapshot of what happened over the weekend. But it’s not interested in printing a summary of the speakers’ presentations, though, and instead it gives a taste of what was happening away from the main stage, giving a sense of the conversations taking place backstage, over lunch or at the bar. And for this seventh issue the overarching theme is empathy in design and business.

    In this issue:

    • Art director Anna Kulachek on the joys and challenges of teaching
    • Author and academic Heidi L Maibom on what empathy actually is (and what it’s not)
    • How to treat interns
    • The Urban Talks section presents stories of urbanism and architecture
    • And an introduction to regenerative design

A magazine that embraces the edgelands, Superstore Wilderness is drawn to the places that are neither rural nor urban – the often overlooked spaces that sit on the outskirts of our towns and cities. And the magazine is also kind of neither one thing nor the other – the tabloid size and improved newsprint make it feel like a newspaper, but its personal stories and lovely photography are 100% the stuff of independent magazines.

      In this issue:

      • The brutalist beauty of Simon Phipps’s photography
      • Finding yourself in a liminal space
      • Making the case for National Park Cities
      • The environmental and social opportunities of brownfield sites
      • And lots of stories about cycling, running and walking through the edgelands

But we can tell you that they cover a range of subjects, from art and design, to cultural criticism and philosophy, and they have all been enjoyed by our subscribers at some point in the last year. (But they’re not literally the last five we sent – that would make it too easy to guess which ones they are.)

We launched our first limited edition Surprise Pack last year and it worked really well, but we’re deliberately not doing too many of these, and the numbers will always be strictly limited, so grab yours while you can. And at the risk of stating the obvious, please don’t buy this Surprise Pack if you have been a Stack subscriber in the last year, because you probably already own these magazines!

Our artwork for this second Surprise Pack is by Coco Lom, an artist and designer from Hackney. She’s on a mission to open our eyes to all the joyful shapes, colours and patterns around us, creating illustrations with assistance from her trusty photocopier. See more of her work at cocolom.com.
